Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. -  5:00 p.m.
Salary Range: $40,379.04 - $52,434.72 yr.

JOB DUTIES/QUALIFICATIONS

JOB PROFILE: (Brief summary of responsibilities and requirements)

  • Manage the editorial process of Unity Magazine.
  • Conceive, assign, edit and write articles, and direct editorial style and content of the publication making editorial decisions and providing input on the graphics.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE: (Functions essential to job)

  1. Responsible for the final approval of each issue, signing off on MAC runs, proofs, and blue lines before the magazines go to press. The editor will also edit books and other products for Unity House Books.
  2. Interview, hire, train, support, and coach prospective employees in the Unity Magazine department. Document and evaluate employee performance—communicating frequently and maintaining constructive relationships with employees.  Lead by example.
  3. Create a cadre of reliable writers for the assignment of original articles. Manage assignments and deadlines of all writers and regular columnists and contributors.
  4. Select and compile material for each Unity Magazine issue. Create issue rundowns. Distribute feature-article material for quarterly Editorial Board approval.
  5. Set up concept meetings and layout presentation sessions with the Creative department.
  6. Edit manuscript copy for correctness of spelling, grammar, punctuation, meaning, line length, and Unity Magazine editorial style.
  7. Write Unity Magazine messages, the Editorial, and articles as needed for each issue.
  8. Correspond as needed with writers, reporters, authors, publishing houses, ministers, and subscribers.
  9. Proof and correct runs and galleys of typeset copy for all Unity Magazine issues. Check printer’s proof to ensure correctness of tints, artwork, and placement of type.
  10. Provide Unity Magazine content for unitymagazine.org, and other Unity websites, upon request.
  11. Develop the strategic direction for Unity magazines online.
  12. Create and manage online content for all Unity magazines and other major publishing projects upon request.
  13. Handle requests to reprint or use Unity Magazine material.
  14. Plan, prepare and complete all phases of the budget process for Unity Magazine editorial.  Track expenses ensuring that the budget is maintained.
  15. Analyze data and trends to make sound decisions for both short-term and long range planning driven by strategic objectives.  Evaluate overall effectiveness of Unity Magazine material on an ongoing basis.
  16. Represent Unity Magazine as requested in Unity presentations, programs, and events.
  17. Participate in new Unity Magazine project development, as needed.
  18. Participate in the development, production, and editing of Unity House Books.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to hear and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read correspondence, computer screen, typeset galleys, and other materials pertaining to Unity Magazine.
  • Ability to sit at computer for extended periods of time to enter and retrieve information.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules.
  • Ability to make decisions, working with and meeting weekly deadlines.

Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Journalism or media and 5 years experience.
