Internal Communications Specialist

Department: Communications
Status: Full-Time; Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 7:30 – 5 pm (telecommuting possible)
Minimum Starting Salary: $36,709.92 - $47,679.84 yr.

JOB DUTIES/QUALIFICATIONS

JOB PROFILE: (Brief summary of responsibilities and requirements)

  • Design, develop and implement internal communications programs and activities to assure clear, concise, timely and effective communications up, down and across the organization.
  • Develop communications tools and programs that support key organizational goals and initiatives.
  • Oversee the daily operations and updating of a new and improved intranet.
  • Develop programs that improve two-way communication and employee engagement.
  • Support Executive Management, the Spiritual Business Units and key departments in getting timely information out to Unity employees and the Association of Unity Churches.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE: (Functions essential to job)

  1. Draft and/or edit all internal communications and ensure the messages consistently reflect business goals and objectives
  2. Work with Executive Team, HR and Communications Division to communicate key issues and initiatives, including content for the strategic plan.
  3. Oversee ongoing operation of new intranet. Plan, write, edit and post articles and plan and post photos and graphics for home page and Communications section. Serve as liaison with content managers from SBU’s and other key departments. Introduce new features as needed to improve effectiveness and employee satisfaction.
  4. Work with SBU’s and key departments (including HR) on project-specific communications plans and development of materials as needed.
  5. Introduce new programs (e.g., employee forums, employee “hotline,” Brown Bag presentations, Info Exchanges among departments, Lunch ’N Learn discussions on timely issues and topics) to foster a more unified, motivated and informed workforce.
  6. Partner with HR to communicate information related to compensation, benefits and other employment and policy issues.
  7. Write and/or coordinate content and graphics for Unity’s article for each issue of Contact magazine.
  8. Prepare content for the new E-newsletter being developed by the Web Group.
  9. Write and coordinate content for the annual stewardship report to donors and constituents.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: (Functions specific to an individual position)

  1. Prepare talking points, memos, PowerPoint presentations, speeches and announcements as needed for senior leadership.
  2. Write and distribute company announcements for both internal and external audiences.
  3. Assure that all customer-facing employees are kept current on new programs, initiatives, events and activities at Unity. Provide talking points for Customer Service.
  4. Assist with coordinating, planning and implementing employee events. Work with Creative Department to develop posters, brochures, banners and other collateral materials as needed for special campaigns and events.
  5. Coordinate presentation, content and staffing for Unity booths or exhibits at external events.
  6. Assist in planning and implementing special events and employee recognition programs and activities.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Must have a degree in Journalism or Communications, or equivalent level training and experience.
  • Two to four years’ experience in internal communications, employee communications or similar corporate communications, including experience in all types of communication channels (e.g., online as well as print, face-to-face communication programs, presentations, etc.).
  • Familiarity with best practices in internal communications.
  • Clear understanding of the connection between internal communications and organizational performance.
  • Strong customer service ethic.
  • Exceptional command of writing/editing fundamentals, with a thorough knowledge of AP style and a strong interest in organization communications.
  • Strong communications ability with highly developed journalistic writing, editing and interviewing/researching skills, and a thorough understanding of multiple communications and production channels.
  • Excellent project management skills; ability to manage and coordinate numerous internal communications projects on deadlines on time and on budget.
  • Understanding of organizational dynamics.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • General understanding of graphic design.
  • Basic digital photography skills.
  • High level of comfort in working with senior leadership.
