| Most people have life insurance, and many
have policies that have outlived their original purpose.
For instance, a policy bought to provide for a college
education that was completed without needing to cash in
the insurance can be an excellent gift, fully deductible
for the cash value. |
 |
There are several
ways to give life insurance:
- Give a Paid-Up Policy
This is a policy that has outlived its original purpose,
a policy that has been replaced by another policy
or simply is not needed any longer. If you bought
a policy for someone who was lost in a tragic accident,
the policy may be given to Unity as a memorial in
that individual’s name.
- Buy a New Policy
You may find that you can make a much larger gift
than you could otherwise afford by taking out a life
insurance policy and naming Unity as owner and beneficiary.
The premiums you pay will be deductible on your income
tax. It’s a way to make a large gift on the
“installment plan.”
- Give a Single Premium Policy for Maximum
Benefits
One of the best ways to help Unity through the use
of life insurance is by purchasing and giving a single
premium life insurance policy with Unity named owner
and beneficiary of the policy. You purchase this policy
by making a premium payment which is entirely tax
deductible if Unity is made the owner of the policy.
Interest is earned immediately on the entire investment.
- Buy Insurance to Replace a Bequest
While reviewing your estate plans, you may find you
can give an amount of money now that you had planned
to bequeath in your will to a nonprofit organization,
receive the tax benefits of your current gift, and
replace the money you had planned to bequeath by buying
a life insurance policy for that amount. You enjoy
the satisfaction of giving now; you receive the tax
deduction now when it is needed most, while still
leaving the same amount you had planned for in your
will.
- Add a Beneficiary
Regardless of your financial circumstances, you can
name a nonprofit organization like Unity as a secondary
or final beneficiary of an existing or new policy.
That simply means that if the first beneficiary(ies)
predecease you, Unity becomes the beneficiary. This
ensures that if your dependents do not need your funds;
your funds will be available to continue the work
that you are committed to. Because the gift is not
definite, there are no income tax benefits, but if
any funds do go to Unity, they will be deductible
from federal estate taxes.
